The story

2 min read
There was once an woman of 43 and her daughter of 9. One day, someone moved in, and graciously, the 9 year old gave up her room to this person, content with the couch, as the visit wouldn't be very long. The visit became longer, and as time passed, more people came to stay at the house. The one who moved in first was very controlling and took over the house. The ones who came after her became complacent with what they could take and paid no mind to the feelings of those who lived there first, going so far as to bully the 9 year old.

A few months, turned to years, and in this time, the now 11 year old had been used a scapegoat, spit on, lied to, controlled, provoked and then punished for her justified anger, and more. All this without a door to close to keep the pain away for a moment, no one on her side to protect her or stand up for her except her older sister, who was sent far away after a while. She was left with nothing.

The mother, her house taken away, her hobbies ridiculed, her life violated. However, she had a door, a room that she could close the door to. Just for a moment she had peace, before someone unwanted opened the door to invaded her privacy.

5 years passed, and both were scared for life. But which one had it worse? The 9 year old with no authority or voice? Or the woman who had a voice, but didn't use it? Or can these situations even be compared?

Riku Soma: The Beginning

A late bloomer, Riku didn't start his journey until he was 13 when he ran away from his home. Overbearing, almost abusive foster parents hated pokemon, due to their first and only child having been killed in a Taurus stampede, and forbade Riku to get his own pokemon. For about a year before running away, he used an abandoned cottage as a place to house injured pokemon, but his foster parents become suspicious and found him out. An argument and a fight broke out, causing Riku to run.

With no pokeballs, no money, and no friends, he had no idea how to catch his first pokemon. A day or two of wandering led him to a city, or more specifically, the pokemon pound. The tiny cells were filled with strays that terrorized the city's back alleys before pounds were installed. On closer inspection, there was a cell that was less active when he entered. In fact, there was no activity at all. Inside laid a ninetails, with only seven tails, a missing front leg, and a bandaged eye.

It looked as if it had given up on life, and the tag on the cell gave the date of it's demise. Tonight. The ninetails  opened it's eyes for a moment and gazed at Riku with clouded vision before sniffing at the water bowl that was just out of reach for the pokemon that was too weak to even move anymore. Reaching in, Riku shoved the bowl towards the ninetails, but in a bolt of movement, the ninetales closed it's jaws around his hand, having mustered up enough energy to move itself that far. It growled and he grimaced, both stifling a cry of pain. He looked the ninetales in its one eye, pain and sympathy showing through clearly. The ninetales let go and licked at the trickles of blood dripping down his hand before lapping at the water bowl and laying its head back down on the cold concrete floor. It seemed to know that biting the only person who showed any interest in it sealed its fate. But Riku was a strange trainer.

A strange trainer indeed.

"How much for the ninetales?" Walking up to the front desk, he tucked his injured hand inside his pants pocket.

The lady at the desk fixed her glasses and looked at him with a confused expression, "Ninetales? You mean that poor excuse for one in the back? You must be thinking of a different poke-"

His face twitched with anger, "One eye, missing leg, seven tails. Yeah, I know which one I'm talk about."

"Look, kid. You look like you're on your own and there's no way you'll be able to take care of it by yourself unless you're some kind of medical genius. That ninetales is gonna go to sleep tonight, for a very long time. It's pain will finally go away, so just let it go in peace, will you?" Shuffling the papers on her desk, the lady went back to her paperwork, feeling satisfied in her words.

"I want it. How much for it?"

"Are you still going on about that ninetails?" She looked up and gasped. Riku's eyes were steadfast on her, a look of sheer determination. He would not give up. That ninetales would be his if he had to clean pokemon cages for a month! The lady sighed, "It's being put down tonight. Come back no later than 8:30pm. A minute later and he goes to sleep as planned."

The clock said 1:28pm. He had about 7 hours. In that time, he had to find a place to stay for the night so that he and his new pokemon could sleep comfortably. Maybe the poke center.

8:00pm came quickly. At least, that's how it felt to Riku as he ran around doing chores at the pokemon center. They had agreed to help him with the ninetails for a while if he'd work hard around the center. Leaving the center, he arrived at the pound with ten minutes to spare, and those were the longest ten minutes of his little life. The lady who was at the desk emerged from the back room and beckoned to Riku, ushering him into the back room. Ninetales cage was empty.

In the back room, there was a metal table and vials of liquid in the shelves. Ninetales was strapped down on the table, eyes closed.

"It's cruel to let a pokemon live without a name… it's even worse to die without a name. A name is a bond, a passage to the soul, a connection between two souls." The lady looked down at Riku, "Would you name her?"

His eyes widened, "But, you said-"

"Are you going to name her or not?" She picked up a needle from the counter and flicked it, looking at the amount of liquid inside.

He could feel his blood begin to boil. Did she bring him here to have him watch the ninetales die?!

"Its name… is Nana." He whispered. The woman smiled.

"Why that name?"

"It's a reminder that it'll have to work harder to make up for the tails it's missing. The less tails you have, the weaker you are, right? Or is that just a myth?" He stared at the ground.

"Who knows." She leaned down and placed the needle to the hip of the dog, pushing the sharp metal into the skin. Riku looked up in horror and moved to grab her, but she was already pressing the button that released what was in the needle.

"You… you said I could… I GOT HERE ON TIME! I GOT HERE EARLY!" Tears came to his eyes as he wrapped his arms around the neck of the ninetales, burying his head in it's fur. Suddenly, a pain ran through his arm. Looking up, face wet with tears, he saw the jaws of ninetales clamped down on the his forearm, "Wh-what? But, you gave him-"

"Pain killers?" She picked up a bottle that was right next to the needle and showed him the label. It was a pain killer for pokemon, "I though you would have noticed the bottle. Sorry~!"

It took a moment, but ninetales seemed to remember Riku as it let go of his arm and licked the bite marks. The straps were undone and ninetales was lifting off the table and laid in a cart, cushioned with soft blankets that Riku had borrowed from the pokemon center. Riku was still a bit shaken up, so the lady, now known as Amanda, offered to help him back to the center. In return for accidentally putting him through such a traumatic experience, she bought him a couple of pokeballs and offered her help whenever he needed it. His determination had grown on her.

At the center, ninetales was treated and re-bandaged. Unfortunately, its eye could not be saved and due to lack of care in the pound, it would probably never recover completely. Riku watched through the window as Nurse Joy worked tirelessly to get ninetales, or Nana, back on its feet. He felt pretty helpless right now. Wandering down the hallway, he noticed a door cracked open. The room was filled with medical journals and books on pokemon health. Taking one down, he sat in the chair behind a desk and began reading.

It only seemed like minutes before Riku looked up from the book. In reality, it had already been four hours and the light of sunrise was beginning to peak over the horizon. The sky was still deep blue, but every moment, it brightened. He felt it was only right to compare his life to a sunrise. The thick, ominous blanket of night was finally being lifting, revealing the bright future that was ahead of him. As he looked out the window, the door of the office opened and Nurse Joy ushered a limping, but altogether better looking ninetales into the room. Riku smiled and stood from the chair, kneeling in front of Nana. They looked into each other eyes for a tender moment before Riku held out his hand. Immediately, Nana's teeth sunk into his fingers, but released quickly and licked at the additional puncture wounds.

"Ah sorry, Riku, I should have warned you. That's kind of an unconscious reflex for her now. She'll have to be trained out of it, but I'm sure you can do it with time!" Nurse Joy tried to sound optimistic, but it was obvious that she didn't quite believe it herself.

With a shrug, Riku smiled and placed a hand on Nana's head, "I can get used to it for now. If I have Nana, I can endure anything, I know it."

So, first of all, new skin! It's pretty, no? Green and black are awesome~!

Anyway. So, my little brothers just had their birthday and they're 11. You can see them at a younger age by going to my old account :iconmariko15: and seeing the Young Hitachiin Twins in the gallery. There were a few things they saw in the deviant-shop that they'd like. So, with you guys' help, I'd like to get them those things for their birthday, even if it may take a while to accumulate all the points needed. Thanks!
